It was like a royal visit and a peace manifestation, combined. Already when sailing past the harbour to present the photographers with our best angles we understood that our hosts were to do their very best. The small boats were perhaps not as many as when the Swedish Ship Götheborg left her home port of Gothenburg in Sweden, but then helicopter after helicopter arrived, tugs were following us on both sides sending cascades of water into the air and signalling with their mist-horns. We fired a port and starboard salute and were met by a singing and dancing company on the quay, and a big crowd. When that same song was heard from the ship, there was a storm of rejoicing on the quay. As soon as the gangway was in place, captain Peter Kaaling and supercargo Hans-Erik Emanuelsson went straight for the stage that had been built in the harbour. There were also four representatives of the city, headed by the mayor, Mr. Lennart Olausson, CEO of Business Region Göteborg and Mr. Stellan Mjärdner, CEO of the Swedish East India Company. Everyone gave a speech, some prepared, some straight from the heart, and regardless of which one could feel the extremely positive atmosphere. Unfortunately Mr.Göran Johansson , the mayor of Gothenburg, missed it all, due to a delayed flight. But the crew followed the whole event from the best of places, starboard railing. Then there was a press conference on board and a guided tour of the ship for two Chinese delegations. Everyone on board was of course very eager to see the town and as soon as the first group were free of their duties, they quickly disappeared. And the festivities continued, including a dinner ashore, next to the ship. Obviously the interest in our visit has surpassed everybody´s expectations, so at this dinner there were only seats for ten persons representing the crew and the rest had that same dinner served on board.
