Today we had a fire drill. To make it as realistic as possible, a crew member had been instructed to “panic" on the alarm and run away and hide. It took the smoke divers in their complete gear only slightly over ten minutes to find this person, in spite of the fact that they had not been informed beforehand about this part of the drill. And then there are a lot of nooks and corners to investigate before one could truthfully say that the Swedish Ship Götheborg has been thoroughly searched. We also practized carrying injured persons on a stretcher. Between decks, however, the live person was replaced by a large log in order to avoid bruises when passing ladders and hatches.
After dinner Professor Johan Rodhe gave a much-appreciated lecture on the oceanographic research on board. For an opening he also told about the historic background, including statistics from the more than 125 journeys to China or India made by the Swedish East Asia Company of the olden days. Otherwise we have prepared to sail a very ship-shape ship into Port Elizabeth tomorrow.
And, no: we did not forget the International Women´s Day!
