As seen in the logbook we have taken in sail on the aft mast, making the ship easier to handle now that the wind has shifted, coming on more from the aft. Plans are also to reef the fore sails, to have enough sails up when the wind increases. This also diminishes the wear on the rigging and our speed is quite adequate.
Today the capstan was used to haul up the main top yard. This is usually done using hands and ropes but the watch was given the choice between that and using our old-fashioned capstan. We are also trying various old navigation instruments on board the Swedish Ship Götheborg. Comparing measurements from these, once used on the original ship Götheborg, and our modern instruments is quite interesting. The altitude of the sun is therefore measured with a so-called “Jacob´s staff" and we are also using various types of logs to decide our speed.
But how we do that notwithstanding, our speed is fine enough. Distance to go is now less than one third of the whole distance between Port Elizabeth and Fremantle, which means we are well ahead of our schedule.
