Comments:
Today we have done something like changing the steering-box in a car - while driving. The other day it was necessary to adjust the roll on which the whip-staff is resting and moving along the great arch of the powder-room. Today it was observed that this roll actually was wearing down the wood underneath it and that it was also fractured. So we had to change it immediately, but at the same time the steering mechanism had to work. So a thick, hanging plank was rigged up, where the whip-staff could glide when the roll was changed. The roll was made of hardwood, about ten centimetres in diameter and sitting on an axle which is part of the wrought iron construction that is attached to the whip-staff. It turned out that the roll was split into two halves. The temporary suspension of the whip-staff allowed only for limited turns of the rudder. So the helmsmen were ordered to handle the rudder accordingly and keep it still at times. The new roll came quickly into place and was secured by means of a wrought iron frame around the whip-staff. The frame in turn was fastened in its position with several wedges. Also the platform constituting the axle of the wooden roll and the wedges were secured to the whip-staff with several thick nails. The construction looks good enough, but there are very strong forces affecting the steering mechanism all the time. One should remember the old Latin proverb, “Gutta cavat lapidem, non vi sed aepe cadendo", i.e. the drop of water makes a hole in the stone, not by violence, but by often falling.
Sailing is great right now with the wind in from abaft the beam, gentle seas, a sun showing itself quite often and the water temperature rising by the day, which also decides the air temperature.
