Comments:
One of our officers has a copy of an old ship´s diary in half-bound with beautiful gold-tooling on its back: “The Ship Crown Prince Adolph Friedrich´s Journey to China in 1746- 48" . It was written by the brothers Herman and Israel Reinius, 20 and 18 years old, who in October, 1745, signed on as midshipmen on the ship´s first journey to China. This ship originally had been shipping salt in the Mediterranean and was bought, according to the introduction to the diary, by “The Gracious Swedish East India Company", obviously after the first “Götheborg" had foundered off Gothenburg.

This diary provides us with detailed descriptions of life on board in those days. Time after time the terrible food on board is described in detail. But unlike ourselves they succeeded in catching fish rather often. A recurrent description is how the ship, when another vessel was approaching, was being prepared to defend itself against buccaneers. There were thefts on board and the person found guilty was sentenced to 30 strikes by the cat-o´nine-tails. So there is quite a difference between life on board the Swedish Ship Götheborg and the ship that replaced its predecessor.

Right now we are heading straight for Fremantle. Waves, swell, birds, sail setting and releif of the watches are just like before. But it was a short night, since the ship´s clock was put another hour forward.
