Comments:
Welcome to Fremantle! We could really feel that we were welcome when entering the harbour. The three-master Leeuwin sailed before us between the piers and we had firefloats before and aft of us. There were people in boats, on the piers and on the quays. Welcome speeches and exchange of gifts. A group of aborigines made a performance on the quay. The ship´s own representative of the Swedish indigenous people Sami had dressed up the traditional way for the occasion and the Sami flag was hoisted to the port ensign halyard, and the Australian flag naturally on the starboard side. When we approached the quay some of us suddenly thought: “Is everything over now, isn´t there going to be something more?" But there will be arrangements in the harbour, not least those initiated by our Australian deck-hands.
We have been living on stage for a few months, a privilege carrying also a lot of responsibility. All we write and report, all films and pictures sent out, have easily reached a very large audience. Our task, to represent Sweden, the city of Gothenburg and Swedish enterprise, has also implied a great responsibility, to be carried with pride and reflection. And it does not stop with many of us signing off. Now is the opportunity of disseminating all the positive experiences of this voyage to many more people. Our hope is that the idea inherent in the expedition to China has received support and following winds during the longest leg on the whole journey. Let the fair wind of “the roaring forties" be a symbol of the will to make this project carry on, a wind from the right direction, strong enough and a wind that we could use fully!
