At 0150 p.m. we cast off! Our departure had been preceded by good wishes from VIPs as well as our shipping company and the city of Cape Town. Finally the Swedish Ship Götheborg and its crew were blessed by a South African priest. Towed out of the harbour with a gun salute. The weather was excellent and our departure was followed by thousands of people on the quays, by boats that followed us for some nautical miles, by helicopters and also by a pair of aircraft from the South African Airforce. Rather soon we also had another, unusual salute: a whale dead ahead that was blowing repeatedly - something very much appreciated by all of us.

We then went by motor to Hout Bay where the old battery was saluted with six shots from the starboard and 6 shots from the port guns. The two salvoes were answered by a corresponding salvo from the battery at the eastern point of the bay. The guns in this battery are Swedish and from the time of the original Swedish East India Company.

So now the sailing from Cape Town to Australia has started for real. Information is that the direction of the wind and its strength are both going to favour us, at least during the first days. Maybe we can set sails after doubling the Cape of Good Hope.
