Now we are really making full speed ahead! Winds have been very good for the last 24 hours, with some 30 m/s as a maximum. A foresail with reefs and no more sails was enough to give us impressive speed towards Port Elizabeth. We have not seen land all day, but a number of ships at a distance, meeting us as well as passing us. The Swedish Ship Götheborg was rolling quite a lot last night and everything not secured functioned as a very efficient alarm clock. Now with the evening the wind seems to slacken somewhat, so hopefully this night will be a bit more quiet.

Angling has been out of the question and our oceanographic and marine biology scientists on board have not been able to make their measurements due to our speed. But there will be another day tomorrow!

The problem occupying most of the crew today has been two50 litrecans of soap. They were delivered in Cape Town and were supposed to be used for washing the deck. But then the question was raised whether this strongly coloured fluid had a pH value that would also solve the oil used to protect the deck-planks. Neither scientists nor the sick-bay had any instruments to measure the acidity, so a phonecall was placed with our agent in Cape Town and an answer is expected tomorrow. Then we also expect to have reached Bird Island, a small island in a bay east of Port Elizabeth. Maybe we can anchor there, awaiting to proceed to quay in Port Elizabeth.
