At lunchtime we could see the island of Ilha da Boavista far away. It is part of the island-nation Cape Verde. It was a sun-scorched island with large sand dunes all along the coastline. The Swedish Ship Götheborg will sail through the southern part of the archipelago today and tomorrow. Tonight, after this ship´s diary has been written, we will celebrate Saint Lucia, so that event will be reported later on.
Yesterday evening there was an incident on board the Swedish ship Götheborg that could have had a bad ending. The material in the main topsail halyard had been worn out and it snapped, falling to the deck. Luckily no-one was standing under it or even near it, so there was nothing more to it. A thorough investigation as to the cause was of course started immediately. During the day the major work, not unexpectedly, has been to put a reserve halyard in place.
King Neptune has been friendly and sent us some wildlife during the day. We have been escorted by a group of various gannets. They enjoyed themselves chasing flying fish that were startled by the East Indiaman as we plowed along. The main dish was a flock of pilot whales that came after us and then played in the waves around the ship. They are somewhat bigger than dolphins, black and with rounded heads. It was a privilege to see them. The most catching sight was a mother with her baby, swimming close to each other, watching the beautiful ship from Gothenburg...
