The day has been rather eventless on board the East Indiaman. Weather is overcast and in reality no wind. On-going work is carried out, like the mending of the old foresail and the not very exciting but very important job of taking stocks.

Shortly after lunch this calm was however suddenly interrupted. A very strong shower with ditto winds came over us and everybody had to let go what they were doing and assist on the deck. First of all our four studding sails were taken in and then, one by one, topgallant sails, mizzen staysail and mizzensail, and then we sailed on under our reduced set of sails. This short period of bad weather also made us drift more than 90 degrees from our course and we had to follow until it eased down. The positive thing about this nuisance was that we were surfing away at ten knots, something really worth waiting for. But not to worry - right now this little deviation from our course has been corrected and we are once more sailing south.

Some who are very pleased with this day are the engine-room chaps. In the morning the wind died completely and the main engine was started. “Order at last", as one of our technicians anonymously put it. The cause for our going by motor is that if we are waiting for wind, then we have to make an increasingly higher average speed in order to reach our destination on time. If we wait too long and there is no wind, then we will have to go by motor for the rest of the journey. To avoid this we are now steaming along for some time, hoping to find fair winds and setting sail again.
