Last evening the “Götheborg´s" technical manager gave a very interesting lecture on safety on board. Its title, “From Titanic to Estonia", sounded a bit ominous and that was perhaps also the point. Focusing major disasters and accidents at sea we were piloted through history and informed how they had affected the development of an ever-increased safety at sea. We were also appropriately informed about the foundering of the 18th century Götheborg and its consequences for safety at sea and ships´ constructions. And we were in this context also told the reasons behind the design of the modern “Götheborg".
Yesterday we left Cape Verde behind, having sailed through this group of high and barren islands for two days. The next time we see land again will not be until the new year when we are expecting to see the coast of Brazil and the town of Recife. Depending on the weather and fair winds it may also be that we can make a detour past two Brazilian groups of islands on our journey, but more about that if so happens.
These days we are also half-way between Cádiz and Recife. We are now on the open seas again and rather alone. The most tremendous thing right now, at least to modest Scandinavians, is to get used to the immense depth under us. Quite a few days ahead we will have a couple of thousand metres of water under the ship. Right now the depth is about five kilometres and at its peak it will be doubled. Not bad for a person considering10 metresrather deep.
