Yesterday was finalized with a grand show arranged by the midship watch. It included a hilarious voting to select the Saint Lucia of “Götheborg" 2005. Björn Rinde and his company won, after having performed what could perhaps be interpreted as some oriental belly-dancing. Honorable second was an international show, performed by one of our two Chinese guests from the Chinese television and our Brazilian friend Renata. Success, of course. Our CPR doll Anne came last. And we ended with community singing of “The boat of our hearts", concluding this very nice evening.
At work there is as usual a number of tasks waiting, more or less prioritized. The major job today was to prepare a new foresail. It was equipped with reef points and made ready to be bent on. The old foresail that has been in use since May is to come down for a much-needed overhaul. In our woodworks department, bumper guards for our longboats are being manufactured. They will be attached about midships, one on each side, to protect ship and boats when these are launched or taken up. It is an important job that will require at least a few days.
King Neptune has kept his disciples away the whole day. The only thing worth reporting was a whale far away. But our two scientists are busy bees around the clock. An instrument, christened Sputnik here on board, is launched into the depth at regular intervals in order to check salt content, temperature and other things. Every now and then a plankton bag net is also being dragged after the ship for a while. From it, a number of creatures, invisible to the rest of us, like cyclops and jellyfish are taken out, making our scientists very happy.
