Friday too went on according to what could now be called routine. From the early morning hours until noon the ship was visited by a large number of school classes who had a guided tour on board. As before, it had been arranged by SKF and the town of Recife. During these visits one cannot not praise our three Brazilian students enough. With patience they are guiding group after group, day after day. Without them, these visits had been considerably more tough.
Other more or less unannounced visits continue in a steady stream. Information is that TV is showing something about the Swedish Ship, East Indiaman “Götheborg" nearly every day. To us that is very flattering and interest seems to remain on top. Today we had the pleasure of guiding 15 Swedes who had come down from the town of Natal just to visit the ship. Gloomily they saw that the ship was closed today and that no visitors were allowed on board. But luck was on their side and they got a guided tour on board - something they would not have had if they had arrived to “open ship". When their visit was nearly over, some commotion could be noticed among the male participants. They had spotted Recife´s carnival queen who was on board, rather scantily clad, to be photographed. For a few minutes interest in the East Indiaman strangely enough seemed to diminish. It must however be confessed that the guide also was a bit unstructured when this fair lady was around.
Friday was also the first day for the new crew. After having arrived to the East Indiaman in the middle of the night, they had some sleep before the start of this day´s moderately intense programme. Moderately because we do not want to get them exhausted, also considering their first meeting with the hot and humid air here in Recife. Following a couple of information rounds on food, waste handling, cleaning, watches, technology, climbing in the rigging and not least a tour of the ship, our newcomers were ready to collect their thoughts and wonder what on earth they had embarked upon.
