What a reception! Tugs were signalling as we passed the moles. We fired an 11-round salute, which was answered from ashore. As we closed in on the quay several orchestras were playing and there were dancers and acrobats. Lovely singing by the crew. Special streamers with the Indian and Swedish colours were hanging in the rigging. More music.
Formal speeches by representatives of the City of Chennai and the local Government. Captain Kaaling, Deputy Prime Minister Ms. Maud Olofsson and CEO Stellan Mjärdner of SOIC (the foundation behind the expedition) also gave speeches. School children were singing and waving flags. Large units of naval cadets paraded. Really a grand reception! There were also some 130 journalists and press photographers making interviews and taking pictures. Press conference on gundeck, all crowded by the media. Captain Kaaling and one of the volunteer deckhands who is a famous actress in India got a lot of attention. In short, an absolutely fabulous reception.
