At last! We finally got some wind. Right now it is rather perfect, wind speed and direction. Most of the day we have been sailing at more than 6 knots and that is really good. We also have a stream, at that, helping us with between a half and one knot towards Cape Town. And as a consequence crew spirits are much higher. It is obvious, therefore, that sailing makes you happy.
Yesterday a bored crew member wanted more action. After all these days without wind and a calm sea the dramatic events could be counted on the little finger of one hand. Well, with a fire alarm this day saw some action. After a well disciplined and orderly fire station mustering, well drilled beforehand, it was established that it was a short-circuit in a transformer in the provisions store. It never caught fire, but our sensitive smoke detectors reacted immediately and sounded the alarm. The transformer is now repaired and everyone is very pleased about the fact that everything worked out as expected.
After dinner our technicians came with an improvement as to the sound level on board. They lowered the velocity of our fan system. This might not sound very exciting to the outsider, but after several weeks of continuous high background sound from the fans it is a fantastic change. The next step to reach “silent sailing" would be to shut down the generators as well. That however would not be as easy, considering all the sensitive instruments and equipment we have on board. But any improvement counts.
