The latest Swedish East India Company, which is chosen to manage the construction of the East Indiaman Gotheborg at the Terra Nova Wharf in Gotheborg, anticipates that the vessel will be launched in 2002 and follow in the footsteps of the forebearers, with a voyage to China in 2004. The East Indiaman Gotheborg is being built as close to the original as possible, but it is equipped with engines and modern equipment complying with full safety regulations.
EAST INDIAMEN OF THE DAY.
Gotheborg's latest equivalent is the world's largest container ships, which each week load for the Far East in the Scandia Harbour, a couple of hundred meters from the reef where the original Gotheborg met its destiny. These container ships are nearly 350m. long and 42m. wide, compared with Gotheborg's 40.5m. in length and about 10m. in width. The 17th. century East Indiamen were therefore shorter than the width of modern day vessels, a fact which summons respect.
CLOSE CONNECTIONS BETWEEN THE HARBOUR AND GOTHEBORG.
Gotheborg's Harbour has many connections with the East Indiaman Gotheborg and its historical past. The harbour was the base for the Swedish East India Company's operations between 1731 and 1813. During this period, about 137 expeditions were sent out from Gotheborg with Swedish export goods, to return from the East with metals, porcelain, spice and silk in their holds.
CO-OPERATION WITH THE PROJECT.
Gotheborg's Harbour knows how to co-operate with the enterprise of building and sailing the East Indiaman Gotheborg, says the Managing Director of Gotheborg's Harbour Pty. Ltd., Mr. Gunnar Nygren. History ties us together. Today we have a powerful equivalence to East India shipping and we have a sister-harbour relationship with Shanghai in China. In return for its sponsorship, Gotheborg's Harbour Pty. Ltd., will be able to use the East Indiaman Gotheborg in their marketing strategy.
We, at the Swedish East India Company, are very pleased that Gotheborg's Harbour have made the decision to support the project. The co-operation agreement will give the project valuable possibilities with both national and international contacts in the future.
The Managing director, Mr. Jorgen Gabrielson, said the agreement will strengthen the project and will give a well earned contribution towards the realization of building the East Indiaman Gotheborg.
