Comments:
Ship in sight, at least on radar. Its transponder informed us that it was Chang Ho,225 metreslong. She came from abaft of us on starboard side, crossing our course far ahead.
There never is silence on board the Swedish Ship Götheborg. Holiday sailors are used to attend to anything that could disturb their sleep. We, however, always have a muffled background noise from fans and generators and the stronger the wind, the more sounds from the rigging. There is squeaking, creaking, scratching and banging. The sounds one really dislikes is however those emanating from flying objects. It could be someone slipping with a basket of fresh coffee in one hand and newly baked cookies in the other, or a drawer with its contents that has left its anchorage.
Right now we are trying to sail parallel with latitude 40. This is where to experience “the roaring forties", but so far the weather has not been worse than between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth, for example. This is also where we could break our speed record but right now that is hardly possible, since we are hauling the wind a bit too much.
