Comments:
The mizzen staysail was taken in yesterday afternoon. It is called the “monkey" in Swedish. Why is unknown to this writer but the number of animal names used in the vocabulary of the old sailing ships is striking. Often enough it is easy to understand the similarity between what is described and the animal name. Cat-o´nine-tails is of course well known.
Some diving last week made it clear to us that we have rather little weed growing under the water-line. On board, however, it is really growing! Here and there, at least, the ambition of growing a Newgate frill during the voyage is easily detected. Perhaps it could also serve as a protection against the chilliness at these latitudes?
