Terms and conditions

Onboard the Swedish Ship Götheborg you will be sailing as a deckhand (no experience needed) or part of the professional crew. As a deckhand you are a vital part of the crew and you will gain a great experience of which you could only dream of. You will get to know yourself and your fellow sailors under extreme conditions, often with aching limbs, blister on your hands but with a big smile on your face. Of course, we want to give as many people as possible the chance to experience the life and the adventures onboard.

To be able to join the crew we have set some basic terms, because the type of work onboard requires that you are in good physical and mental shape. Please read below the conditions and requirements needed for participation.

Covid-19 information

In order to carry out our sailing trips to and from Stockholm in a safe manner regarding to Covid-19, an intensive work is in progress to have extended health routines before sailing and during sailings.

We are constantly updated on the recommendations and guidelines of the Public Health Agency of Sweden. We have also started a collaboration with doctors and nurses for medical expertise and advice.

Based on the Covid-19 situation today we plan to take Covid-19 test for all the crew members before getting onboard.  Daily fever measurements on the crew can also be relevant in order to minimize the risk of infection and to have a safe working environment onboard. We are also following the vaccination progress closely. The more people who have been vaccinated before departure the better.

Medical Requirements

To be accepted to sail on The Swedish Ship Götheborg, you will have to fill in a health declaration confirming that you are in good physical and mental health, and that you fulfill the medical requirements to participate in work onboard. If you do have a back problem, please be aware of that you will be sleeping in a hammock onboard. We will not provide special diets, except for vegetarian, glutenfree and lactosefree meals. And we are sorry to say that it is not allowed to bring your own food onboard.

Working at Heights
The time-typical rig means that many of the deckhands are needed when setting and handling the sails. One requirement is therefore that you must be able to climb up and help with the rigging. It is natural to feel a certain unease initially at working at such heights, but most people get used to it quickly. If you know you cannot cope with heights, you should not join the crew as you may risk both your own and your fellow sailors’ safety.

Age Restrictions

To join the crew, you must be over 18 before the day you sign on the ship. There is no upper limit, but you need to be fit and healthy enough to climb in the 40 meter high rigg in all kinds of weather.

Physically & Mentally Demanding Work
Teamwork onboard is incredibly important. The Swedish Ship Götheborg has few mechanical aids, which means it takes a lot of muscular effort and co-operation to handle the sails and the rig. You will be spending some periods of time at sea, with no opportunity to go ashore, so it is very important that you feel confident about yourself and that you are in good physical and mental shape. In case of emergency you need to be able to swim at least 200 meters.
